Mayweather Pacquiao Fight

It was billed as the fight of the century, as undefeated Floyd Mayweather took on top contender Manny Pacquiao Saturday night, May 2nd

Many will argue the fight didn’t live up to the hype, but one thing is for sure,  Spirits on Bourbon was the unanimous decision as best place to watch the fight.

Patrons gladly paid the $25 cover charge to watch the title bout at Spirits. The energy and excitement inside Spirits rivaled that of the MGM Grand as the fight approached.

Spirits was filled from the front door to the courtyard with a standing room only crowd

that included NFL stars Golden Tate and Fred McAfee. “The crowd has been great, and the addition of the NFL players makes Spirits the best place to watch the fight this side of Vegas”, said coowner Brad Bohannan

As the fight grew closer, bar management was forced to deny entrance to any new patrons. Coowner Steve Smith explained, “We were at absolute full capacity. For the safety of our customers, staff, and per the fire marshal we couldn’t let anyone else through the doors. We must have turned away over 300 people.” That didn’t stop huge crowds from growing on Bourbon St. to peek through the doors and windows trying to get a glimpse of the action. The mob outside rivaled that of a Mardi Gras crowd.

management decided two weeks prior to the fight to delay its nightly Dueling Piano show and drop down the 10ft big screen to show the huge Pay Per View event.  “We were getting calls up to a month in advance, inquiring about the fight.  Mass appeal events like this don’t come around too often” said Bohannan. With its huge TV on stage, 8 high definition Tvsinside, and 3 more in the courtyard, Spirits can easily transform from live music venue to sports bar and back for such a special event.

When the night was over, the judges awarded Mayweather the win. It was another great night at Spirits on Bourbon.

Only in New Orleans! Brad Bohannan and Steve Smith, owner’s of Spirit’s on Bourbon, have breathed new life into an old hearse with the help of Anything Car Audio and Upholstery. Anything Car Audio has wrapped the black hearse with Spirit’s logos, added Brazilian hardwood flooring and installed an antique barber chair straight from the attic of the haunted Spirit’s on Bourbon. With six ten inch Rockford Fosgate Speakers and an eight hundred watt amplifier this hearse could wake the dead.

Third Annual Alzheimer’s Research Raffle at Turtle Bay Raises $1650

The fundraiser raffle at Turtle Bay on Sunday netted $1650 for Alzheimer’s research.

This year was the third annual raffle to raise money for  the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Association, which was organized by “Turtle Baybe” Mardi Johnson. For those who do not know, Turtle Bay is the sister bar to Spirits on Bourbon.

Mardi is a long-time patron to Turtle Bay. She along with several of her friends have named themselves as the “official” Turtle Baybes krewe here at the bar.

Numerous prizes were awarded to raffle winners. Several prizes were to be won, including Turtle Bay merchandise and gift certificates. Several people came to show their support for Alzheimer’s research and gratuitously donated their hard-earned money for a good cause.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease and there is no known cure. The disease is not very well understood, but the disease eventually leads to death, although it can take years. Researcher’s estimate that one in 85 people globally will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s by the year 2050. One of the most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s is long-term memory loss.

Mardi was extremely grateful. “It is because of people like yourselves that an answer to the riddle called Alzheimer’s will be solved much sooner than later,” she said.

Turtle Bay owners Steve Smith and Brad Bohannan were equally as grateful for the turnout, which included several dozen patrons. Smith and Bohannan–who matched 20 percent of the raffle earnings–both champion causes such as this.

A grand total of $1,200 was raised from the raffle itself, plus $150 from her donation page, and then add another $300 contributed by the Turtle Bay owners.

“Thanks to Mardi Johnson and her Krewe of Turtle Baybes, everyone had a great time for a very worthy cause,” Smith said. “This is the third year Mardi chose Turtle Bay to hose her fundraiser and we are proud to help in raising money for Alzheimer’s. Mardi works hard all year long and collects prizes from area businesses to support her efforts. Thanks to Mardi, and our generous neighbors and patrons, this was another very successful charity event. We are just proud to be a part of it.”

Brad weighs in. “We have been blessed with the ability to help raise money for some great charities,” he said. “Not a day goes by with me not realizing how fortunate I am. I feel it’s an obligation to give back.” The money raised–$1,650-may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to the grand scheme of things. However, this is one of many charity events that raise money for Alzheimer’s research. Because the disease is still much of a mystery, every penny sent to research helps.

More work needs to be done. And even though the raffle has ended, you could still donate towards Alzheimer’s research by going to Mardi Johnson’s donation page.
